Pincushion invasion!

I thought I would finally "jump in" and make pincushions as holiday gifts. I have seen some really sweet one's on Wendy's blog and thought I would be a copy cat and make some myself.

I used my Bernina Embroidery software to design these little gems.

I took the opportunity to experiment with the software. It was fun to try and come up with various embroidery designs that would be suitable for this project. Lots of learning was going on today!

DD fell in love with the lady bug one!

I decided to forgo the yoyos and use some buttons from my collection. I have never made yoyos and with all the learning going on today, I didn't need another challenge! lol

The stuffing used is either recycled wool or cotton batting. There's nothing like creating with the environment in mind! ;o)

For this pincushion I used walnut shells as the filling, or as the pet store calls it "Bird Litter". lol

Darlene had recommended this product a while back. This is what she uses in her pincushions. The oil from the shells conditions the needles.

I did not like how it looked with the wrapped thread. I had a difficult time obtaining a firm cushion. The lack of filling was probably the cause of funky look! So I settled for just buttons as embellishment!

Thank you for stopping by! Your comments are always a joy to read!

Great use of your embroidery features! I hardly ever use my features, but when a fun little project comes along I am always happy to have a machine that can do things like that!!! You could try mixing 1/2 nut shells with 1/2 wool maybe? I have a friend that is a sheep farmer and I am going to ask to buy some fleece come spring.

Cheers!

Carol, these are fabulous. I love them with the embroidery. Like your DD, I fell in love with the one with the ladybugs. Very cute. I think that fiberfill, etc would probably work best for these rather than 'bird litter' (LOL) - not firm enough.
I'll have to try these someday.

And, I love the Santas under the pincushions. What pattern is that? Very cute!

The ladybugs are chasing each other...oh so cute :-)

Santa peeking out are so fun. I think that might be a Debbie Mumm pattern.

Aren't those adorable...I like the ladybugs!! and the Santas peeking from behind.
Hope you are keeping warm and dry what with all the snow!...sometimes, though not often, I do miss the snow and a good snow storm!

I like your pincushions, and what a good idea that was for fancying up the tops. I use the walnut shells, too, also from a feed store, and I make a little muslin pillow to put them in and then put that inside the pincushion. This is how a Tucson shop taught them during a demo at their quilt shop hop several years ago. The shells give a little more weight to the pincushions. I think you did just fine with these.

They are so cute! Love the little ladybugs :)) I don't know if we have the walnut shells up here - they must be really finely ground? I have uses a silicone type sand that is quite good - and cheap.

I've used the crushed shells also - recommended by a friend in guild. I fill the bottom part of the pin cushion with poly stuffing - the underside where one doesn't stick pins, and then fill the top part with the shells. That works really well because the stuffing gives it shape. You could do the same thing with batting scraps. (I cut mine into squares and use them to clean my longarm.)

I happened to come across your blog and would you be willing to share what pattern the santa quilt is from? Thank You
