Today I worked on part one (1) of Wildberry Vines BOM. I had not worked on this part of the pattern so I felt it would be best to start numerically. This part has three (3) machine pieced blocks, nine (9) patch star and five (5) applique blocks. I worked on the nine patch stars today and managed to prepare the hand applique squares.
I'm one of those quilters that does not read all the directions before starting. I guess you can say that I'm visual and just look at the picture and the numbers. So I proceeded to cut the necessary fabric for the center of the star as instructed, 1 & 3/4 inch strips. Upon completing the center, I read the instructions. The author says "square nine-patch to 4 1/2" X 4 1/2"." Okay, so a light bulb comes on! Why should I be squaring? After doing some math I concluded that the strips should be cut 1 & 13/16" in order to arrive at her required measurements. It annoys me when designers are not accurate. So my next two (2) blocks were cut accordingly, the top block being the first pieced.
Off to do some hand applique while watching a DVD. Hum.... what movie shall I watch?

Carole, deep, deep, way deep in my sewing room closet lives this project. LOL No, I haven't started it. I bought it as a kit, as it had been a BOM at a local quilt store and they had a couple of extra kits (sound familiar)so, naturally, I HAD to have one. Bear in mind that this way before I started doing any kind of applique. LOL Maybe you'll inspire me to pull it out and at least get reacquainted. :-) Have fun with yours, it's beautiful.
Your blocks look great. . .but I know I would have cut the fabric even larger than the directions said & then cut down. . . that way if my stitching was a little off I wouldn't have to rip stitches & re-do it.
Guess my problem is I still prefer hand piecing over machine piecing & I am afraid of really messing things up.
Keep up the good work. . . I can't wait to see your project as it grows.
Carole, you inspire me to keep plugging away. I have been pretty self motivated but watching you keeps me moving ahead....
HI Carole, your blocks look great. You sound like you follow my motto - When all else fails-read the instructions! LOL
Your blocks are beautiful Carole!!! i love the colours and yes designers should be accuarate but sometimes we have to "trial and error" till we get it right!!.......good luck with it!!!
